In â€Å"Young Goodman Brown,† the setting is based on the historic background and takes place during the Puritan Time Period. The story takes place in the Salem Village near the forest which makes the reader associate this story with witchcraft and evil. Many people believed that the forest was the devil’s home. The story starts out with Goodman and Faith in their home with Goodman saying his goodbyes to Faith and tells her to go on to bed and to say her prayers. â€Å"Say thy prayers, dear Faith, and go to bed at dusk, and no harm will come to thee† (Hawthorne 91). Goodman sets off walking into the forest and it quickly turns dark and the deeper he goes into the woods the darker it becomes. Hawthorne depicts that evil is not present until the dark of the night. In â€Å"The Rocking-Horse Winner,† the setting is nothing as dark as in â€Å"Young Goodman Brown.† The setting is a nice house suitable for a young boy such as Paul to live. One can assume that the story may take place somewhere in England. The darkness appears when Paul tells of the house talking to him saying â€Å"There must be more money! American Dream In The Great Gatsby - 1366 Words

The American Dream has various implications for diverse individuals. For some people, the concept implies that one can accomplish his or her objectives and goals through living this dream. To others, it provides a beacon of hope, as an open door that individuals desperately desire to enter in pursuit of opportunities. The Americans after World War I, boosted by the emotions of the war, had an uncontrollable vigor about accomplishing and displaying an extravagant way of life and achieving a high social position. The people of America considered bliss to be embedded inside the American Dream and without that, life would be without pleasure and thus without meaning. For Myrtle, Tom is the ideal personification and advertisement of the American Dream. Myrtle is considered to be a denizen of the lower class because she cannot dress in the trappings of wealth. Therefore, she participates in a marital affair with Tom to claw herself to an upper-class status. Ernest Lockridge says, â€Å"Myrtle’s desire to escape her social class is made possible by her connection with Tom, Myrtle will not stay in her place, the valley of ashes rises against the East Egg† [Lockridge, 170]. She acknowledges that she is not part of the upper class, yet hopes through association with Tom she can be labeled as such. Moreover, her pursuit of the American Dream places all her hope in material items and she fails to emphasize the importance of the values behind the concept. It is her demand for a luxurious life and pursuing the American Dream that led to Myrtle’s demise, exemplifying how the pursuit of the American Dream as depicted by Fitzgerald causes destruction. Daisy is The Great Gatsby’s most mysterious and the most disappointing character. Although Fitzgerald does attempt to make her character worthy of Gatsby’s devotion, at the end of the novel, she reveals her mercenary interior. Reader Response Criticism William Faulkner’s a Rose for Emily Essay Example For Students

Reader Response Criticism: William Faulkner’s a Rose for Emily Essay Reader Response Criticism: William Faulkner’s â€Å"A Rose for Emily† â€Å"A Rose for Emily† was written in first person point of view. The narrator is never given a name, but it is apparent to the reader that the narrator is one of the townspeople. This is evident in the opening of the story when the narrator exposits that, â€Å"our whole town went to her funeral† (Faulkner, â€Å"Rose† 90). This story tells the tale of Miss Emily Grierson in psychological order, beginning with her funeral (as a flashback) and ending with the gruesome discovery of her lover’s remains in her bed (in present time). The destinies of Miss Emily and her lover, Homer Barron, are alluded to by the author’s extensive use of foreshadowing. The author of this story, William Faulkner, was born in 1897, in New Albany, Mississippi (William Faulkner Contemporary par. 1). He was a member of â€Å"a once- wealthy family of former plantation owners† (William Faulkner par. 1). Although the town is never named in the story, â€Å" A Rose for Emily† is one of his several stories set in the fictional town of Yoknapatawpha County, â€Å"which bears a close resemblance to the region in Northern Mississippi where Faulkner spent most of his life† (William Faulkner Contemporary par. 8) . This is important to know when applying a historical criticism to this body of work. Stanley 2 The setting of this story is important to establish so that the reader can understand why Miss Emily and Mr. Barron come to meet their ultimate fates. The story takes place in the Deep South and covers the years, approximately, during the middle of the 19th century and extending through the beginning of the 20th century. The reader can infer this because â€Å"Miss Emily had been a tradition, a duty, and a care†¦dating from that day in 1894 when Colonel Sartoris†¦remitted her taxes, the dispensation dating from the death of her father on into perpetuity† (Faulkner 90-91). The reader later learns that her father died when Miss Emily was around thirty years old and she dies approximately 30 years after him. The author refers to Emily as â€Å"Miss†, Sartoris is â€Å"Colonel,† and Blacks are referred to as â€Å"Negroes† and even â€Å"niggers. Applying a historical criticism to this story, this is during the time after the Civil War when a lot of former plantation and slave owners were essentially penniless, but because of their former stature they still considered themselves aristocrats. So, even though she is actually destitute, it is evident that Miss Emily has been taught by her father that she is of the noblest of blood and was kept away from the rest of the townspeople. Although he is not mentioned extensively in the story, Emily’s father has a profound and perhaps tragic effect on Emily. She remains single and friendless because â€Å"the Griersons held themselves a little too high for what they were† and â€Å"none of the young men were quite good enough for Miss Emily and such† (Faulkner 92). So when her father dies she has an especially hard time coping because he’s basically the only person that she has contact with. In fact, she was so upset by his death that it took her three days to finally allow the townsmen to remove her father’s dead body. This act also foreshadows the discovery of Homer’s body in her bed at the end of the story. Stanley 3 The narrator also tells of an incredible stench eminating from the home of Miss Emily. The smell is so bad that â€Å"four men crossed Miss Emily’s lawn†¦like burglars, sniffing along the base of the brickwork †¦ open the cellar door and lime there, and in all the outbuildings† (Faulkner 92). Immediately after that anecdote is told, the reader is introduced to Homer Barron. This also foreshadows to Homer’s rotting corpse that is eventually discovered in her bed. Another instance of foreshadowing is when Miss Emily purchases the arsenic from the druggist and refuses to tell him what t is to be used for. â€Å"A Rose for Emily† incorporates two types of conflicts within it. .u0e61082748843fb8fdb28ca7827508e9 , .u0e61082748843fb8fdb28ca7827508e9 .postImageUrl , .u0e61082748843fb8fdb28ca7827508e9 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u0e61082748843fb8fdb28ca7827508e9 , .u0e61082748843fb8fdb28ca7827508e9:hover , .u0e61082748843fb8fdb28ca7827508e9:visited , .u0e61082748843fb8fdb28ca7827508e9:active { border:0!important; } .u0e61082748843fb8fdb28ca7827508e9 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u0e61082748843fb8fdb28ca7827508e9 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u0e61082748843fb8fdb28ca7827508e9:active , .u0e61082748843fb8fdb28ca7827508e9:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u0e61082748843fb8fdb28ca7827508e9 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u0e61082748843fb8fdb28ca7827508e9 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u0e61082748843fb8fdb28ca7827508e9 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u0e61082748843fb8fdb28ca7827508e9 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u0e61082748843fb8fdb28ca7827508e9:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u0e61082748843fb8fdb28ca7827508e9 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u0e61082748843fb8fdb28ca7827508e9 .u0e61082748843fb8fdb28ca7827508e9-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u0e61082748843fb8fdb28ca7827508e9:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Catastrophes that Plagued the Characters in Romeo EssayThe attitude that the Griersons had towards the townspeople and vice- versa, shows man versus society. It is significant, and perhaps the key conflict, because Emily’s social class belief isolates her. This makes Homer’s desire to leave her unbearable and drives her to murder him. This in itself is an example of man verses man. The author orders the plot psychologically, to prepare the reader of what’s to come. Faulkner also used the order of the plot to help the reader to understand the reason behind the Emily’s actions that are uncovered at the end of the story. Thereby, making it less scandalous and more of a shock. Stanley 4 Works Cited Faulkner, William. â€Å"A Rose for Emily. † In The Compact Bedford Introduction to Literature. Ed. Michael Meyer. 8th ed. Pauls Case Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Pauls Case - Research Paper Example The story commences with Paul’s faculty hearing after he was suspended from his high school located in Pittsburgh. He arrives at the meeting in outfits that are shabby and debonair at the same time. In particular, he had a red carnation in his buttonhole, which affronted the members of the faculty. As presented in the book, Paul is described as a narrow-shouldered, tall person with large pupils that strike the chord of a drug addict (Cather 7). The members of the faculty had a hard time to coherent their feelings about Paul. They all have a feeling that Paul hates them deeply. His family members view him as a person who had no interest in school. Moreover, the faculty members complain of disturbance caused by Paul in the classroom, and his defiant nature to the student’s council among other bodies. When Paul is still in the presence of the council, he keeps smiling, which makes his accusers feel insignificant. Some of the misdeeds he was identified with included disorder, ill will and impertinence to the staff and his fellow students. Moreover, he is also described as suave due to his nature of raising his eyebrows, which were regarded as irritating, and the brilliance in his eyes, which quivered the teacher’s casual touch (Cather 10). Paul’s drawing master was always on his side claiming that the teacher’s did not understand him clearly. Moreover, he also states that the mother to Paul had died after his birth in Colorado. These statements make the teachers and other members of the faculty ashamed about their ferocious nature towards Paul. Later on, Paul went Carnegie Hall that is located in Pittsburgh where he served as an usher. He had arrived quite early that day, so, he went through the Hall’s gallery to get a view of the paintings of Venice and Paris (Cather 20). In his strolling, he stares at one painting named blue Rico. Afterwards, he proceeds to the changing room together

Capstone Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words - 1

Capstone - Essay Example When promoting their products, they make extensive use of celebrities as product ambassadors, which lends to their products and hence their consumers a sense of glamour and makes the consumer’s feel like some part of the celebrity’s skills rub off on them with the product usage. Nike target’s the common man who is interested in sports and fitness and banks on his skills and has a winning attitude. The brand also promotes hard work and competition and this is reflected through their promotional advertisements. Nike’s vision is â€Å"to  carry on the legacy of innovative thinking, whether  to develop products that help athletes of every level of ability reach their potential, or to create business opportunities that set Nike apart from the competition and provide value for our shareholders†. According to Nike’s vision for the future, they keep introducing innovative products in the market. Like, recently, they are going to launch the Nike à ¢â‚¬Å"Studio Wrap† in 2013, which are fashionable ‘barely there’ shoes, designed for people who are more into modern studio workouts like dance, Pilates and yoga. These shoes are the picture perfect mix of innovation, style and athletic requirements. Products like these by Nike help everyday and professional athletes the support and motivation to stick to a healthy lifestyle and to excel in their chosen field of sports. Nike products create additional value for its customers by adding style to the equation; all Nike products are aesthetically pleasing, yet high quality, innovative sportswear. 2. Analyze the five (5) forces of competition to determine how they impact the company. A big job to be done by the company’s strategists is to deal with its competitors; however that’s not all that their duties encompass. According to Porters’s theory there are four other forces that need to be taken into consideration. Following is a diagram outlining t he relationship between these five forces of competition. (Harvard Business Review Magazine, 2008) Originally published in 1979, Porter’s article talks about external forces that a company has to consider when planning competitive strategy. Namely, these include the bargaining power of producers, the bargaining power of consumers, indirect competition by substitute products, threat of new entrants due to barriers of entry and the rivalry between the existing players in the market in the specified category. (Harvard Business Review, Magazine, 2008). In Nike’s specific case, the business is lucrative and highly profitable and thus new entrants are common. This would reduce market share and profit levels but Nike stays on top of its game due to its immense goodwill in the market, its reputation, product quality and innovative techniques. However strategists have to remain on their toes to make sure that the company’s strategy doesn’t lag and allow new entran ts to gain on Nike’s expense. This requires them to continually innovate product design, establish strong customer relationships and loyalty, invest in research and development, invest in employee training, improve distribution and most importantly patent their designs and products to protect them from competitors. Using these precautions will mostly eliminate the threat of new market entrants. Threat from substitutes is low, because Nike provides essential gear for athletes and sports men and women which cannot really be substituted by other product, especially in the shoe category. Other sports gear

Aldemar Hotel and Spa [Operations Management Case Study] Essay

Aldemar Hotel and Spa [Operations Management Case Study] - Essay Example Yield management has become particularly important in the travel and hospitality industry. This is primarily because the resources such as airline tickets and available rooms in a hotel are fixed and cannot be increased or decreased to manage the demand of the consumers at different periods of time (Barnes, 2008). This is also the main reason that yield management is so important for Aldemar. It allows the owner to manage the hotel’s limited resources which includes its rooms in the best possible manner. The managers at Aldemar cannot increase or decrease its room capacity to facilitate the demand of the customers. When there is increased demand of the rooms during holiday season, the management risks losing its important and loyal customers when the rooms are already booked and they cannot overbook due to its long-term impact of the customers’ perception and the hotel’s reputation. Similarly during low demand of the rooms, Aldemar faces issues of decreased reven ues and increased costs as rooms require maintenance and the organization has to pay for its overhead costs that remain more and less constant during all seasons. With the help of yield management, Aldemar can hope to move certain customers during the off-season thus keeping room occupancies more or less constant. What other approaches to capacity management could Aldemar use? There are other different approaches to capacity management that Aldemar can benefit from. One of them includes promotion. Aldemar Hotels can use promotion as a mode of attracting consumers during the off-peak season. They can offer rooms at discounted prices or could introduce new features during the off-peak season. They could use their online website to promote such offers. Another approach to capacity management is product development that falls under the category of demand management. Demand management includes managing price, promotion, reservations, and waiting etc. During the off-season, Aldemar Hotels can offer certain services and products that would attract a high number of customers. Aldemar can for example shift the opening and closing times of their hotels to accommodate their guests. They could allow guests to benefit from tour guides for discounted rates during off-peak season. Aldemar could particularly benefit from using its spa for product development. It could introduce new offers or products for consumers during the off-peak season. The third approach is to adjust the changeable resources in line with the demand of the organization. This is known as chase demand that involves sub-contracting, hiring part time labor, multi skilling and participation of the customers. For example, during peaks seasons, Aldemar can hire extra part-time labor to make up for the increased work load. They could add or share their equipment through partnership agreements. Furthermore, Aldemar can delegate extra work during off-season period such as renovations in the hotel rooms. Critically assess Aldemar’s current yield management practices (e.g. the organizational structures, procedures, performance monitoring). Even though yield management has come forward as one of the best approaches for managing capacity for the hospitality industry, many organizations fail to incorporate this management strategy in the best of manner. In this manner, they lose a

Concept Of Strategy According To Henry Mintzberg Business Essay

Concept Of Strategy According To Henry Mintzberg Business Essay According to Henry Mintzberg in his 1994 book The Rise and fall of Strategic planning focused on strategy being used by people in different ways. The commonly used strategic ways are as follows: Strategy is a Plan: This describes the word How which allows achieving your target/ goal from one end to the other. Strategy is a Pattern: It is a pattern in terms of actions delivered for example a company uses high end strategy to market expensive products to maintain standard, Quality and supersede competitors. Strategy is a Perspective: a vision that provides direction to achieve outcomes. Strategy is a Position: it reflects the decisions involved in the deliverance of the organizations service/product in a particular market. Concept of strategy according to Michael Porter Michael Porter in his 1996 Harvard Business Review article and 1986 book, Competitive Strategy points out that competitive strategy is all about being different and unique. He added, It means deliberately choosing a different set of activities to deliver a unique mix of value The basic concept of strategy comes from a military background and it is now widely practiced in a variety of business. The adoption of the strategic concept from that of the military into the business was considered to be easy as it was modest. As in the military and likewise in the business, strategy is bridging the gap between tactics and policy. Being very specific in defining strategy is not easy as the different perspectives on strategy vary. Thus a very broad conception of strategy according to De Wit and Meyer in their book (2010), Strategy, Process, Content, Context, is, A course of action for achieving an organizations purpose STRATEGY PROCESS: Strategic Management is a process which is lead by different ways. According to many other text books including De Wit and Meyer (2010) the Strategy process is a linear progression trough a number of distinct steps. As in this competitive market organizations tend to go through a process in order to achieve best outcomes. This process is divided into different stages which includes, strategy analysis, strategy formulation and implementation stage. The report evaluates the three strategy dichotomies of the strategy process contained in the following perspectives: Strategic thinking Strategic formation Strategic renewal Figure -1: Strategy process and its Aspects. STRATEGIC THINKING (Logic vs. Creativity) A lot goes on in the mind of a strategist prior to the process of strategy implementation. Strategists are constantly engaged with problems during the strategic process. These paradoxes that arise during the strategic process can be challenging in different situations and the right type of action taken to resolve them. According to the Rational or logical reasoning perspective the demand and need of constant market analysis and its capacity assumed to gain advantage from the market should be based on actual facts. Logical thinking will provide a better understanding of the opportunities and threats upon critical analysis of the environment. Creative thinking is the opposite of logical thinking as a logical thinker will only be able to draw conclusions on success of strong arguments thus the thinking is limited and based on formal rules where as creative thinking does not have set boundaries and the thinker can think beyond the set rules and draw conclusion. Creative thinking gives a bigger picture and vision for the future created in the real sense. It holds a higher risk but often needed when identifying and diagnosing strategic problems. As creative thinking and logical thinking are opposite, the demand of both can be contradictory yet they are needed at the same time, (DeWit and Meyer, 2010). The best example of creative thinking is Apple Inc case study (DeWit and Meyer 2010) as their strategy involves creative innovative products and service in the competitive market. (Refer Appendix A). STRATEGY FORMATION (Deliberateness vs. Emergence) It is the process which determines the steps formed by organizations or individuals prior to its action. The process by which an intended strategy is created is called Strategy formulation (DeWit and Meyer 2010). Mainly top positions in an organization is responsible for strategy production. Managers do not only get themselves involved in the process of strategy formation but also in the ways it will be strategically implemented. When we think strategically we examine that deliberateness and emergence in the process of strategy formation cannot be kept apart. The major fact with strategy is that it deals with both, the plans made for the future and the process to implement those plans to achieve the aims demanding flexibility and adaptability. Deliberate strategy is more towards logical thinking and reflects the formal process of strategic planning and is based on actual facts, but the future is unpredictable and it becomes a foremost need of organizations to deliver their actions an d adapt according to the unfolding circumstances providing them opportunity of experimentation and trails in a particular market. A strong interconnection of such strategy is observed in the example of UPS case study (DeWit and Meyer 2010), (Refer Appendix B). STRATEGIC RENEWAL (Revolution vs. Evolution) When we talk about competitive markets in this changing world, dynamic environment, new technologies, transforming economics and customer demand all aspects are subject to constant changes in a challenging environment. For an organization to meet challenges and face threats in the market it is important to implement strategic changes to remain in harmony with the external environment. (DeWit and Meyer 2010). A change that breaks the old framework is said to be Revolutionary change and the change that is incremental is referred to as gradual change. Both the approaches are vitally essential in reshaping organizations despite of having conflicting qualities.

Fight Club Essay -- Literary Analysis, Chuck Palahniuk

Chuck Palahniuk’s Fight Club is a seductive novel which chronicles an unnamed narrator’s ability to cope with an emasculated, self-centered, materialistic society by creating an alter ego. Throughout the text, the theme of the emasculated modern man is presented both in the life of the narrator, and in the lives of the male characters he surrounds himself with. Through notions of absent fathers, consumerism and an innocuous/aimless existence, Palahniuk presents how men in modern society have lost their masculine identity and the extreme actions they go to in order to obtain it again. Belittled by their absent fathers, broken homes, and a feminine-centered society, the men in Fight Club present an incisive notion of the lives of modern men. With no outlet for expression the modern man is, in all aspects of his life, physically emasculated and emotionally castrated. Palahniuk represents the cultural loss of masculine identity in the second chapter of the text. A group of men sit together in a support group, helping one another cope with the emasculation they are destined to face. The support group, â€Å"The Remaining Men Together,† is for testicular cancer, meaning the men gathered are literally castrated. The men presented in the group struggle with emotional castration as well. One man, â€Å"Big Bob,† is revealed as a former body builder (a rather masculine profession) who abused steroids: trading in his â€Å"huevos† for â€Å"bitch tits† (Palahniuk 21). Bob has also been divorced three times and is now â€Å"bankrupt [with] two gr own kids who [will not] return his calls† (22). Big Bob and the rest of the group are emasculated and revert to emotional release, crying and group hugging, as their form of therapy. An emotional release such as crying is... ...he world free of history† (124) and create a new order where men are prominent. Similar to the experience of fight club, the men in the new order must rely on instinct and strength in order to succeed. Therefore the ability to endure pain is a way to attain power and masculinity. Chuck Palahniuk’s Fight Club is the story of the emasculated man living in the postmodern world. With no father to raise him he is left to his own devices. The grown man will ultimately succumb what culture tells him a man is, often relying on materialistic possessions to define his identity. As a result, the postmodern man becomes a slave to the social order and power relations of conventional society. Although he fits in with this society the emasculated man is miserable with his innocuous existence. Fight club, however, is the means in which he can restore his masculine identity.

Motorcycle Boy Essays - English-language Films, Films, Rumble Fish

Motorcycle Boy Essays - English-language Films, Films, Rumble Fish Motorcycle Boy Number of Pages:122 I believe that the story "Rumble Fish" has a very plausible plot because it's about a boy who is a former gang member and always gets into fights. The boy's name is Russel James, he is fourteen, he likes to fight, he always gets in trouble, and isn't very smart. The boy gets into trouble by fighting, getting drunk, and stealing, throughout the story, but instead of realizing he has got to stop and change his life around, he get in more and more trouble. In my opinion the story is plausible because the boy is telling the story and he mentions things such as drugs, fights, stealing, gangs, and drinking and smoking. Which is very present in our society today. I would have to say that if anything this story was sad, because at the end of the story Russel's older brother, the Motorcycle Boy, was shot when he tried freeing the Rumble Fish from the pet store. That would probably be the main reason the story was sad, besides the fact that Russel's friend Steve had his mother put in the hospital after she became ill. I didn't really like the book because of the fact that there was no real big action in the story. Not to mention, that the Motorcycle Boy was one of the strangest characters I had ever read about. He was so weird that no one in the story really understood the way he thought. He was like an outsider. I think there was good character development in the story because the author wrote the story so that the main character (Russel) often explained to the reader about things that happened in the past to both him, and the other characters. There was realistic character action in the story because the characters didn't do things like fly around in the clouds, or see through walls, they did normal stuff that anyone I know could do. If you don't like or don't care if there's alot of action in a book then I would recommend this book to you. On the other hand , if you like a lot of action, and don't like book without action, then I would not recommend this book for you. i think the most effective port of the story was when the Motorcycle Boy was shot. This event shocked me and totally caught me off guard. If anything I would expect Russell to get shot. Probably because Russell seems to be more of a trouble maker than Motorcycle Boy. I thought the book was alright but the one thing I didn't like about the book was that the action wasn't there. I like books with a lot of action, but this book didn't have it.

In what ways did laws and actions concerning the westward expansion of Essay

In what ways did laws and actions concerning the westward expansion of the United states in the first half of the 19th Century ( - Essay Example As time passed by, however, negotiations gradually grew difficult as factions began polarizing triggered by events that defined each state’s values and interests. This was particularly evidenced during the westward territorial expansion of the US in the early 19th century. These events cultivated and advanced the schism that ultimately led to the Civil War between the North and the South. The Louisiana Purchase, for example, which was negotiated by the Jefferson government in 1803 with Napoleon Bonaparte, became an issue of contention between anti-slavery and pro-slavery in the halls of Congress. Petitions from various northern states, which were anti-slavery, urging the prohibition of slavery in the newly purchased territory, were delivered both in Congress and the Senate by their representatives. Foremost among the anti-slavery speeches were delivered by the representatives from Illinois and Pennsylvania. Representative Cook of Illinois proposed the granting of the Louisiana territory to slave owners in exchange of abandoning the practice. On the other hand, pro-slavery states such as Smith of South Carolina and Smyth of Virginia fiercely defended slavery as a natural state of condition of black people (Shearer 2004). Another historical event within the same period that saw the clash of the anti-slavery north and pro-slavery south was when Missouri applied for statehood in 1820. Most Missouri settlers at that time came from the south, bringing with them their slaves. Immediately, the anti-slavery north representatives objected to the application unless Missouri ban all future slave imports and institute a gradual slave freedom scheme, and the Senate rejected to deliberate and vote on the issue at all. In what is known as the Missouri Compromise, Missouri was finally allowed statehood conditioned on the term that all future slavery north of the southern Missouri boundary will be banned. The Compromise essentially resulted in the creation of a fictional westward north-south line that governed the state of slavery in all of the US. The anti-slavery north was at least gratified that most of the territories included in the Louisiana Purchase were north of said boundary (Bergad 2005). The Missouri Compromise turned out to have left some issues unsettled that eventually emerged when Missouri’s constitution included a provision that called for the exclusion of free Negroes and mulattoes from its jurisdiction. Once again, debates in Congress and the Senate over slavery became alive. In a subsequent negotiation known as the Second Missouri Compromise, Missouri was finally admitted for statehood with an added provision as a caveat that the provision in issue shall not imply blanket authority to enact laws that impair the rights of citizens (Bergrad 2005). The Texas application in 1836 as a slave state for admission into the Union was another instance of overt and passionate clash between pro and anti-slavery factions that eventually led to the Civil War. It was some thought, the straw that eventually broke the camel’s back. Texas was a chief producer of cotton and this industry was largely hinged on slavery labor. When Texas was admitted into the union as a slave state, the feeling of antipathy

Battle of Antietam in Maryland-1862(bloodiest day in all of recorded Essay

Battle of Antietam in Maryland-1862(bloodiest day in all of recorded American History. 23,000 American deaths...even more than D-Day invasion in World War II) - Essay Example The lesson learnt from the Battle of Antietam has been vivid through the following lines and it is for one and all to comprehend what actually went into the actual battle that took place between the United States of America and the Confederates. The Battle of Antietam is also known by the name of The Battle of Sharpsburg. This battle was fought on the 17th day of September in the year 1862 near Maryland in Sharpsburg which is close to the Maryland Campaign. This indeed marked the initial basis for any kind of war to have taken place on the North American soils after the American Civil War had started. Nearly 23,000 casualties speaks volumes about the war being the bloodiest day in the history of America as it played an indirect yet tactical role in giving President Abraham Lincoln the much needed power to have his ‘Emancipation Proclamation’. Each year, the battle is commemorated at the Antietam National Battlefield. The result of the war without any shadow of a doubt was that it was tactically full of loopholes and it entailed a strategic victory for the union. The main combatants in the war were the USA and the Confederate States of America. The commanders at both ends were George B. McClellan for USA and Robert E. Lee for the Confederates. The USA outnumbered the Confederates by double the men, where the former had 87,000 while the Confederates had only 45,000 to contend with. There were around 12,401 casualties at US end, which included 2,108 men killed and another 9,540 wounded badly. 753 were either captured or missing in the whole scenario. At the end of the Confederates, there were 10,318 casualties which included 1,546 as killed and another 7,752 injured. 1,018 men were either captured or missing. Coming to the original topic at hand and finding out as to why this battle began in the first place, we find out quite a few things
